goal #35

"Complete a "First Year" book for Isabelle"
-Goal #35, Emily's 65 in 365 List

At the beginning of the year, I put together a list of all the things I wanted to accomplish in 2010.  The list was 65 things to do in 365 days.  I got the idea from my friend, Karen.  It's not a list full of resolutions.  No way could I EVER resolve 65 things in one year.  This list is more of a bucket or "to do" list.  My goals range from organizing the photos on my computer to going to the dentist to memorizing all the US presidents in order.

Last week, I completed goal #35:  Complete a First Year book for Isabelle.  Isabelle is my daughter, by the way.  Thanks to iPhoto, I now have a 95 page book chronicling Isabelle's first year of life.  It's a pretty great book, and I'm really proud of it.  Now, comes the hard part -  paying for it.  It will cost around $135 dollars for a hard copy or $100 for a soft copy.  Because I'm not super, super rich, I considered a soft copy, but now think hard would be better.

What do you think?

Whether I should order a hard or soft copy book isn't what this post is all about.  Now that I've finished the book, I'm wondering if I sill need to order actual prints of all the pictures I take of Belle.  If everything is in this book, is that enough?  When I'm long gone and Belle's great-great-grandchildren are looking through all her stuff, will they want individual copies of her pictures?

I think photo books are so great.  I think they are greater than photo albums.  They are clean and organized and focus on the picture instead of frilly stuff usually found in scrapbooks.  But, I'm still torn.  Are traditional photo albums a thing of the past?  Would it be silly to have both just in case one is preferred over the other?  Am I the only one that thinks this is a big decision?  Do I need to stop freaking out and be okay with just my lovely photo book?

Thoughts?

  1. Ever since I went digital I haven't printed ONE picture. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but it's the way it is. And I will say that I LOVE not having prints floating around that I haven't stuck in a photo album. And I LOVE that I don't scrapbook because that is just one more thing for me to feel guilty that I'm not getting accomplished.

As for an answer to your question, I'm not really a good authority on the subject (clearly), but if you think you are ok with storing two things, then I'd say go for it. If not, then remain thrilled with the photobook you have. :)

  2. Hmmm, good questions. I hear ya. It makes me a little nervous too to think that I haven't printed out hard copy photos for over 5 years and they're just backed up on this little hard drive that anything could happen to at any minute. Maybe you could do a small album with with just your fav photos of her (like a 4x6?). But then the trouble that I always have is limiting the pics I like of Geddy - because i like them all so much!

  3. I finally came to a conclusion on this. I am going to continue making photo books and forget about ordering regular prints. BUT, I'm going to save all my photos onto discs, so I'll be able to get prints if I need to. I'm at peace with this decision. :)

  4. I think when you're already paying that much, an extra $35 to have higher quality really isn't that much.

As for the desires of Belle's far-distant grandchildren, I think technology will be such at that point that it's really not going to be an issue what you leave them to work with.

  5. I'm contemplating the same thing. I have 3 scrapbooks for Keigan and 2 for Mia. Do I start one for Beckham (even though he's already almost two!) or just do a digital book for him? The girls' books both have special things in them like their hospital bands from when they're born and stuff like that so I feel like Beckham needs his own too. Why is everything so expensive!!!?? Oh and I'd totally print a hard copy. All the way.

  6. I can totally relate to this! And it only gets worse over the years. If you find "the answer" - how much to hold onto, OR how to get over letting it go - please let me know!
